Born about 1320. Lord Mayor of London in 1374 and 1381. During his mayoralty he suppressed usury and strongly supported John Of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster. His most famous exploit occurred during the Peasant's Revolt of 1381, when he attacked and possibly dealt the mortal wound to rebel leader Wat Tyler at Smithfield. Stow reports that when Walworth's tomb was restored, the inscription erroneously credited him with the death of Jack Straw, a different rebel. The church was demolished to make way for the approach to London Bridge.
