Bob was born in Converse, the son of the late Orange and Eva Belle (Overmeir) Irwin. He retired from the Chronicle-Tribune as a pressman. At his retirement in 1985, he was recognized for 43 years of service without missing a day's work.

He received honorable discharge from the Army on Feb. 25, 1946, from the 39th Bomber Group as a corporal. He was a parachute rigger and repairman. He served in the American Theater and the Asiatic Pacific during World War II. He received two Bronze Stars, the good conduct medal and the distinguished unit badge as well as the World War II Victory Medal.

Robert was known as a man of few words. He loved his family and spent a lot of time with them. He was faithful, loyal and was loved and respected by all his family and friends. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda (Robert) Cline, Marion; sons, Robert Bruce Irwin, Marion, Ronald (Vickie) Irwin, Elkhart, and James (Sonya Witt) Irwin, Marion; grandchildren, Debbie Franklin, John Brookshire, Tabitha Bailey, Dustin Irwin, Bret Irwin, R.C. Irwin, James Robert Lee Irwin as well as "adopted" granddaughter, Chrissy Witt; great-grandchildren, Corey Franklin, Andrea Brookshire, Nicko Bailey and "adopted" great-grandson, Kam-ron; brothers, Philip and Ronald Irwin, both of the Indianapolis area; and sisters, Joanne Siebert and Susie Foster, both of the Indianapolis area.

He also was preceded in death by his former wife, Patricia Irwin-Hannah, in 1991; a granddaughter, Michelle Irwin; sister, Sally Danser; and two brothers, who died as children.
