After an illness of six months, Ad Kennedy, sturdy landmark and widely known citizen of Garfield township, yielded to the inevitable last Saturday. Funeral rites were held in Portis, Monday of this week, and the body consigned to the last resting place in Fairview cemetery at this place in a lot the deceased purchased more than a half century ago, and where his first wife and three children are at rest. Editor Kissell of Portis kindly furnished us the biographical sketch below:
Adam Kennedy was born at Fair Haven, Preble county, Ohio, on November 30, 1946 and departed this life at this home in Smith county, Kansas, on April 14, 1934 having lived to the age of 87 years, 4 months and 14 days.
He left Fair Haven, Ohio, with his parents at four years of age and came to North Manchester, Indiana. It was there he received his schooling, graduating from Manchester college. Following his graduation he taught school for four years. On coming west in 1874 he settle upon the claim in Smith county where he had made his home through all these years.
In the year of 1879, on February 25th, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Adresta Hays. To this union was born one child that died in infancy. The mother and wife departed this life about a year and a half later, on October 27, 1880.
Later he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Sebina Wert, on March 25, 1888. To this union were born seven children, two of whom died in infancy. The following survive Elmer L. Kennedy, Smith Center, Kansas; Luscinda Stokesbury, Portis, Kansas; Andrew Ruben Kennedy, Portis, Kansas; Paul Raymond Kennedy, Lebanon, Kansas; Nebindia Beckmann, Portis, Kansas.
Mr. Kennedy was a member of the Masonic fraternity and was raised to the sublime degree of a Mason on January 18, 1879.
He suffered a terrible handicap about four years ago with the loss of his right leg. However, at this age he did not allow that to keep him down but became quite active again until September 27, 1933 when he suffered a stroke and from that date he was confined to his bed the greater part of the time.
He was the youngest son of Jefferson and Margaret Kennedy and was the last one of a family of fifteen children.
He leaves in his passing his devoted wife, five children, eight grandchildren, and many friends.
