Gertrude Kerns, 80, of Mullens died on Wednesday, December 12, 1990 at a Beckley hospital, following a short illness. Mrs. Kerns was a 74-year resident of Mullens, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mullens and the Order of the Eastern Star and had worked as a bookkeeper for C.H. Meade Coal Company at East Gulf.

She was born on November 9, 1910 at Surveyor to the late Joseph Elmer McGinnis (1867-1932) and Lillie Catherine Trump-Clay (1877-1936). She was preceded in death by two sisters, Delcie McGinnis-Carter (1906-Deceased) and Mary A. McGinnis-Campbell (1913-1989); and two half sisters, Lenora "Nora" McGinnis-Stover (1894-1974), and Gracie Clay-Freeland (1897-Deceased); two brothers, Gilbert McGinnis (1908-1986) and William "Howard" McGinnis (1903-1966); and three half brothers, William Jesse "Jess" McGinnis (1891-1968), Dennie Clay (1899-Deceased), and William "Hobart" Clay (1900-Deceased).

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia McGinnis-Calhoun (1915-1994) of Mullens and Betty Lou McGinnis-Keller-Holcomb (1922-2007) of Rockville, MD; a nephew, John Calhoun of Mullens; and a niece, Lucy Charles of Ashland, KY.

Services will be Friday, December 14, 1990 at 11:00 a.m. at the Tankereley Funeral Home Chapel in Mullens with the Rev. Gary Marshall. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum at Beckley. Friends may call today from 6:00 p m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
