Roger passed away at his home in Toronto, SD on Friday, May 26, 2006. Family members are asked to be at the church by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to attend services.
• • Roger was born on May 5, 1924, at Toronto (Deuel Co.), S.D., the son of Ralph and Lydia (Mathison) Nelson. He was baptized the day that he was born. Roger attended Toronto Public Schools. He was confirmed at Blom Prairie Lutheran Church. Roger lived his whole life in the Toronto area. During his early years he helped his Grandpa Nelson with his chores and also helped his Grandma Mathison carrying in wood and water. He was united in marriage to Delaine M. Ost on November 10, 1944, at the Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt (Deuel Co.), S.D. Roger drove truck for Art Dokken and also owned and operated Nelson Trucking. Roger also scooped snow for many people in Toronto. He farmed east of Toronto with his father-in-law for eighteen years. In 1964, he became an electrical service representative for Ottertail Power Company when his father retired. On June 10, 1979, Roger suffered a ruptured aneurism at the base of his brain. He spent several months in a coma in a Sioux Falls hospital and was in the hospital for eleven months total. Then he was in a nursing home for seven more months before he was able to go home. The Sister Kenny Institute in Minneapolis was very helpful in teaching Roger and Delaine standing transfers and other procedures. Roger was disabled and confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. Roger was a member of the Leganger Lutheran Church in Toronto. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas each year, Roger and Delaine would make hundreds of Norwegian lefse, which they sold to a loyal clientele. Roger peeled the potatoes and baked all of the lefse. Other hobbies included wood working, especially making lamps and clocks. He also enjoyed life, bowling, and their lake cabin at Lake Cochrane. Prior to his aneurysm, he was active in the Toronto Community Club and the Toronto Fire Dept.
