"Betty", as she was known to family and friends, was born in New York City, January 5, 1919, to Arthur and Mary Rose Small, one of seven children. Her early years were spent in different locations in the U.S., as her family traveled frequently. She attended Westlake School, in Los Angeles, CA., and graduated as valedictorian of her class.
She worked in banking, and married John Evans, in 1940. To this union were born three children: John, Jean, and Robert. She remarried Malcolm McLennon, in 1949, and to this union were born five more children: Mary, Patricia, Michael, Rosalie and Stephen.
Betty is survived by her husband, Malcolm "Mac", of Palisade; sister, Jean Toll, of Golden, Colorado; sons and daughters as follows: John (Nancy) Evans, of Hayward, CA., Jean (Art) Linton, of Miller, NE., Robert (Carrell) Evans, of Benton City, WA., Mary (Archie) Huenergardt, of Three Forks, MT., Patricia (Donald) Coates, of Colorado Springs, CO., Michael (Elinor) McLennon, of Edmond, OK., Rosalie (Kevan) Albertson, of North Platte, NE., and Stephen (Debbie) McLennon, of Montgomery, TX.; and many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
In the early years of married life, she lived in the Denver area, and moved in 1962, to a ranch on Kimball Creek, near DeBeque, where she spent most of the remainder of her life. In October 2012, she moved to Mesa Manor Care and Rehabilitation Center, where she is fondly remembered.
Betty was always busy and in charge of her large family. Her children and grandchildren were always welcome to visit and help with the animals and ranch chores. She had a great love of nature and enjoyed feeding hummingbirds and songbirds, and caring for the various animals she owned. The grandchildren particularly enjoyed her wonderful cooking and baking.
Scholarship and education were very important to Betty, and many Garfield County 4-H members, remember her as an involved and caring mentor. She believed in community service and was active in the Garfield County Extension Club, and served on local voting boards during elections.
She was a member of the Catholic Church, and belonged most recently, to St. John Vianney Church, in Clifton.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on December 31, 2013, with Father Michael Oswald, as celebrant, in the chapel at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, Grand Junction. Elizabeth was laid to rest in the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, in Grand Junction.
