"Seized with a murderous mania, Sergeant J. Proctor of the artillery corps at Fort Worden, who was visiting Walla Walla on a furlough, shot and killed his former wife, his son and daughter and then fired a bullet into his head. Mrs. Proctor had secured a divorce on the ground of cruelty. She was proprietor of the Metropolitan hotel, and on account of the children was allowing Proctor to board there."
