Bette Lee (Heffernon) McCullough was born January 24, 1927 in Neosho Falls, Kansas and departed this life on Monday, January 13, 2014 at Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 20 days. She was the daughter of Warren Edward and Leona (Fudge) Heffernon.
Bette grew up and graduated school in Concordia, Kansas. After graduation she obtained a nursing degree. She was one of the first nurses in the United States to have specialized training as a cardiac surgical nurse.
Bette proudly served her country in the United States Navy. After her military service she returned to the Kansas City area.
In 1946 she was united in marriage with Dr. Campbell Clarence McCullough, Jr. in Kansas City, Missouri and to this union three children were born. Dr. McCullough passed away on April 1, 1983 and Bette continued to make her home in the Kansas City/Lee's Summit area.
Bette maintained an active life style. She participated in water aerobics before it was fashionable, played golf at least once a week well into her 80's and was the "Club Champion" of Milburn Country Club in 1963 and 1965.
Bette was an avid and vocal Kansas City Chief's fan and a dog lover extraordinaire.
In addition to her husband, Dr. Campbell C. McCullough, Jr. and her parents, Warren E. and Leona Heffernon, she was preceded in death by two brothers.
Bette is survived by one son, Campbell Clarence "Cam" McCullough, III of Peculiar, Missouri; two daughters, Deborah Lee Kirk of Garden City, Missouri and Dr. Cynthia Montgomery of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Michael GrannAn, Vanessa Lee Bloom, Rebecca Lee McConville, Jasen McCullough, Mario Montenero and Maritza Montenero; four great-grandchildren, Jaden Grannan, Drew McCullough, Madeline Lee McConville and Fenix McCullough, other relatives and many, many friends.
Bette was also preceded in death by her beloved dog, Kelsey.
Cremation has been accorded and a Graveside Service and Inurnment is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Kansas City, Missouri.
