NOTES:

  • The paternal grandparents of Thomas Lawrence were John Lawrence (1514–1578) and Cecily Steward, as shown by the will of John Lawrence dated 22 April 1578. There is no evidence to indicate that Thomas Lawrence descends from William Lawrence and Katherine Beaumont (m. 25 November 1559) or that his father was John Lawrence baptized in Saint Albans on 12 January 1561/62 (the parents of whom were not listed in the register) despite early publications claiming this unsubstantiated lineage.
  • More than one John Lawrence lived in Saint Albans contemporaneously. Thomas Lawrence's father John Lawrence (1554–1609) was not the man who married Elizabeth Knowlton on 9 June 1569 nor the man who married Margaret Roberts on 25 January 1586/87. John Lawrence (1554–1609) of Saint Albans married Elizabeth Bull on 9 November 1579 in Hertford as his only wife. For additional evidence of this descent please refer to "The Royal Ancestry of the Ipswich (Massachusetts) and Long Island Lawrence Families" by David L. Greene, PhD, FASG (The Genealogist, spring 1989, volume 10, number 1, pages 3–30).
