LORAIN - Oma Jean Harness (nee York), 81 years of age, and a resident of Lorain, passed away Friday, January 24, 2014, at Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland, following a sudden illness.

She was born July 25, 1932, in Monticello, Kentucky. Oma was raised in the Onieda, Tennessee area before coming to Amherst in 1952. In the 1980s she moved to Oberlin and then Elyria before moving to Lorain in 2011, where she resided until her passing.

Her primary focus in life was that of being a homemaker. Oma was employed as a health aid for 30 years. She was a member of the Free Pentecostal Church in South Amherst. Oma enjoyed shopping, going to Jami's and Jonnie's flea markets and socializing with her friends.

Survivors include her sons, Jerry Harness of Elyria and Ken (Sheila) Harness of Lorain; daughters, Judy (Roger) Dodrill and Joanne Harness, both of Amherst, and Janet (Eddie) Wright of Lorain; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Hubert Harness on February 24, 2001; daughter, Mildred "Faye" Williams on April 24, 2003; two brothers; five sisters; and her parents, Charles and Minnie York (nee Branim).

Friends may call Tuesday, January 28, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in South Amherst.
