Early Settler Dies.

Mrs. Ernestina J. Hendrick Dies at Age of 84. [should be 74]

Widow of the Late Adam Hendrick of Baileys Harbor, Where She Lived Over Half a Century.

Baileys Harbor—Mrs. Ernestina J. Hendrick died at her home in this village on Saturday, Feb. 28, cause of death being heart failure, together with a complication of other causes. Her age was 74 years and ten months.

The death of Mrs. Hendrick takes from Baileys Harbor one of its very earliest and oldest settlers, she having lived here continuously for a period of 58 years, coming here direct from Germany in 1856.

Mrs. Henrick's maiden name was Ernestina Johanna Schermer. She was born at Leutmansdorf, Germany, in 1839, and came to America with her parents in 1856, coming direct to Baileys Harbor.

In the year 1858 she was united in marriage to Adam Hendrick, who preceded her to the grave 29 years ago. For many years Mr. and Mrs. Hendrick conducted a hotel at Baileys Harbor and were among the foremost in building up the village in the early days.

Mr. Hendrick's death 29 years ago occurred on the 19th of April, which was his wife's birthday, and the death of Mrs. Hendrick on Feb. 28th was the date of her husband's birthday.

Mrs. Hendrick was the mother of fourteen children, four dying in infancy. The ten children living were all present at the funeral. They are Mrs. Ernst Leidiger, of Merrill; Mrs. Gus. Pfeifer of Sturgeon Bay; Carl Hendrick, of Milwaukee; Mrs. Fred Bruemmer, of Gillett, Miss Anna Hendrick of Baileys Harbor; Mrs. Louise Vits, of Manitowoc; Mrs. O. P. Voight, of Gillett; Mrs. Nellie Robinson, and Mrs. Henry Gattie of Baileys Harbor, and Adam Hendrick of Manitowoc.

Ernest Leidiger, Gus. Pfeifer, Fred Bruemmer, and Mrs. Carl Hendrick were also in attendance at the funeral.

Besides her children, deceased is survived by three sisters – Mrs. Godfrey Nelson and Mrs. Jacob Appel of Baileys Harbor, and Mrs. Ernest Bues of the state of Washington.

The funeral was held on Monday, services being held in the town hall, Rev. A. Petterson of the Moravian church of Ephraim officiating.
