Joe left school at age 12 to help support his mother and four other siblings after his father died in 1894 by working in a piano factory. He worked for a time at the Charles Parker Co. and then became a letter carrier with the Meriden Post Office where he worked his way up to Assistant Postmaster for the Meriden Post Office, retiring in 1954. Joe died at age 79 on December 6, 1963.
