Governor-General of Canada. Born in St-Anicet, Quebec, he completed his education at Valleyfield College in Quebec, and the University of Montreal law school. He would go on to receive a doctorate in law and use that as an editor and a college professor. He joined Canada's Ministry of External Affairs in 1940, where he nutured his calling as a diplomat. Beginning in 1953 and over the next twenty years, he would serve as Canada's ambassador to Mexico, Italy, France, Belgium and Luxembourg. He was named Canada's Governor-General in 1974. Among his achievements while in the post were raising awareness for the arts and culture in Canada, as well as the restoration of the Governor-General's official residence in Quebec after a fire, a project spearheaded by his wife Gabrielle. When he suffered a stroke soon after taking office, his wife often stood in for him at official functions until he recovered. He retired from public life in 1979.
