Leonard Moore was born in Leytonstone, the son of William
Arthur Moore, a tobacco broker's manager, and Emma
Susannah (née Hill) Moore of 33 Station Parade, Church
Lane, Leytonstone in London.
He worked as a clerk for the Daily Index Branch of the
Lloyd's Staff.
Leonard enlisted into the army at the Royal Exchange
as Private 18756 in the King's Royal Rifle Corps but later
transferred to the London Regiment.
On the 27th of September 1916 the 1/19th (County of
London) Battalion (St Pancras) moved into support trenches
at Bazentin-le-Grand on the Somme. The following day
they moved to the Flers Line, to the south east of Eaucourt
l'Abbaye. On the 29th of September the Grenadier Platoon
was sent out to make bombing attacks on the German
positions along the Flers Line and Flers Support trench
system. It was during this attack that Leonard Moore lost
his life.
He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial,
Pier and Face 9D, 9C, 13C and 12C.
