Arthur Allgood was born circa 1837 in Nash County, North Carolina. By 1859, he was living and working in Rowan County, NC, where he married Margaret Coon on 03 August. A daughter, Alice, had been born to this couple on Valentine's Day that same year.

Arthur enlisted for one year in Captain William H. Howard's Company of Prison Guards on 01 February 1862. His enlistment took place in Salisbury, NC, where he served at the Salisbury Confederate Military Prison. On 01 September 1862, Arthur joined Captain Samuel B. Waters Company, Confederate Prison Guard, Independent North Carolina Volunteers, and continued to serve at the Salisbury Confederate Military Prison.

When his enlistment expired in September 1863, Arthur enlisted in Kinston, NC, in the 66th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry (State Troops), which had been formed the previous month. He was assigned to Company G.

Arthur deployed with his regiment to Petersburg, Virginia, in May 1864. On 10 July 1864, Arthur was mortally wounded during fighting associated with the siege of Petersburg. His remains were interred in Confederate Veterans section of Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. (His grave marker gives the date of death as 11 July 1864, but his Compiled Military Service Record gives it as 10 July 1864.)

His widow, Margaret, never remarried, remaining in China Grove, Rowan County until her death in 1910.

Note: The family would later adopt the spelling "Algood" for their surname.
