Jean was born in about 1621. He arrived in Quebec in 1669. He married (1) Jacquette Chorret about 1641 in France. It's unknown if they had children. Jacquette died in France.

He married (2) Jeanne Labbe on 28 November 1669, in Sainte-Famille-de-l'Île-d'Orléans. They are the parents of the following (verified with PRDH):
1) Francois (1672-1735) md Francoise Bidet dit Roussel
2) Jeanne (1674-1715) md Jean Fradet
3) Pierre (1676-1760) md (a) Marie-Rosalie Pepin and (b) Marie-Helene Laforme
4) Marie-Madeleine (1678- ) md Louis Boutin
5) Jacques (abt 1681-1766) md Marie-Louise Lacasse

The following story is from “Our French-Canadian Ancestors” by Thomas J. Laforest, Vol. XII, Pg 121:
In the spring of 1676, his neighbor's pig got loose and was rooting around on Jean's property. Jean dragged the animal to his neighbor, Martin Poisson's gate, killed the pig in front of Martin and then dumped it in the river. Martin complained to the provost on the island, who found Jean guilty. Jean appealed to the higher provost of Quebec, where he lost the case on 31 July 1676. Jean then took the case before the Sovereign Council on 17 August 1676. Jean again lost the case and was ordered to pay Martin Poisson for the dead pig, fined 2 livres for maliciously destroying Martin's grain field (by dragging the pig through it), he was fined 3 livres for irreverence demonstrated against the court, he was fined 5 livres for damages and interest to Poisson, and another Livre for his foolish appeal.

Please note that there are many spellings of Elie, also Heli, Halay, Hellie, Helle, Helye, Helie, etc.

There is also another Jean Helie born 7 September 1617, who is a different individual.
