Mrs. von Hemert graduated from Chapin School in New York City where she was senior class president. She received her bachelor's degree in Economics from Bryn Mawr College where she also served as the student government president. On October 2, 1948, she married John Ogden von Hemert, who later became an ordained Episcopal minister and preceded her in death in 1996. Toby is survived by three children, Cristy Jones and her husband, Bobby, of Broadway, Virginia, Edith Coulter and her husband, Steve, of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and Tom von Hemert and his wife, Susan, of White Hall, Virginia; six grandchildren, John Michael and Kimberly Jones, Dave, Hannah, Luke, and Will von Hemert

Toby approached life with joy, love and inspiring enthusiasm. No matter if you were family, friend or community member, she made you feel like you were the center of her life and heart.Toby had a determination to uplift those less empowered even when she was personally beset with difficulties. Toby faithfully responded to the calls of both Isaiah and Micah as well as responding to the commands of Jesus "to love one's neighbor as oneself". She was a witness in her family and community in her exemplary service while uplifting women and children in tutoring programs, feeding the hungry, and supporting those who grieved. Toby's wit, intellect, and "can do" attitude and undying faith serve as an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed.
