Della was born in a small farming community, known as Quitman, Nodaway, MO. to Eugene and Elvinia L. (Olds) Vandyke. She had one sister named Sadie.
Della told the story of her mother dying under suspicious circumstances, shortly after Sadie was born, and her father shipped her mother's body and the two girls back to her mother's father, Jeremiah S. M. Olds, in Quitman. The two girls lived with their grandparents for a few years. As the grandparents got older, Della went to live with her Aunt Clara (Olds) Silvernail - in Bon Homme, SD; her sister Sadie married a second cousin, Oliver Preston Olds, relocating to Oklahoma where she raised her family, then to Kennewick, Benton, WA; The two sisters lost contact with each other until 1951, when they were reunited; Sister Sadie died 3 years later.
Della Married James Presley Dawson, and had 10 children. Her husband died in 1953 in Washington. Della remarried to Clinton Ploof, and then later to John Ollie Wade.
Della spent her last few years living with her son William, in Rialto; Della is buried in the same cemetery as John Wade, but John is buried next to his first wife; Della is a few rows up from him
