Mary Hannah James-Jones immigrated to the United States with her parents and brother Rees, arriving in New York on Nov 15, 1894, aboard the ship Teutonic from Liverpool, England. She married David J. Jones on October 16, 1908 in Los Angeles, California. After they married David and Mary lived together with Mary Hannah's family at 926 E. 8th Street in Los Angeles. David, Mary, and son William Rees later moved to 1567 E. 53rd Street in Los Angeles.

Hannah’s first cousins, on her paternal side, founded Llewelyn Iron Works. Family lore has two versions of why she did not become an heiress to the family's fortune: 1) she was disowned for marrying her husband, of whom the family disapproved, 2) there was a fallout from a land agreement.
