William James is the son of Thomas and Margaret James, of Wales. He married Angharad Walters (nee Lake), who was a widow, in Llandilo Fawr in 1874. They immigrated to the United States with their daughter Mary Hannah, and son Rees, arriving in New York on Nov 15, 1894, aboard the ship Teutonic from Liverpool, England. His sister, Hannah James-Llewellyn, who was already living in America, accompanied them on the voyage over. Rees, William, and David, were officers of Llewellyn Iron Works, one of the major companies responsible for the growth of Los Angeles into the metropolis it is today.
