Shirley L. Smith, 82, of Hendersonville passed away peacefully Friday, February 7, 2014 at Elizabeth House following an extended illness. A resident of Henderson County for the last three years, she was a daughter of the late Dale and Grace Duke Knecht. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William L. Smith, a veteran of WWII, in 2008. Shirley was one of eleven children. She was a kind, generous person, always willing to help other people. Shirley was a fantastic wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Survivors include her daughter, Marcia Vestal and her husband Frank of Hendersonville; two grandchildren, Tammi and Sean Sprague and his wife Rebecca, all of Florida; three great granddaughters, Amanda and Shelby Rogers both of New York, Alexandria Marcellus of Florida; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at 2:00 pm Tuesday in Heritage Hall at Emeritus at Pine Park. Rev. Tim Worthington will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 S. Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
She was first married on 21 Aug, 1948 in Indiana to Harold Wayne Summey.
