In 1860, he was a painter presumably living somewhere in or near Franklin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census nor is there an entry for him there in the 1863-65 draft registration. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Harrisburg April 20, 1861, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. B, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Chambersburg August 20, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Pittsburgh October 11 with what would become known as Independent Battery B Pennsylvania Light Artillery. He was wounded in the left side of the chest and captured at the battle of Chickamauga on September 19 or 20, 1863, but paroled by September 29, 1863, an unusually early date. He was then hospitalized and discharged at term's end October 17, 1864.
3. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four in Chambersburg February 6, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 8 as a private with Co. L, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865.

It is interesting that his family opted to inscribe only his first and shortest term of service on the tombstone rather than the more than three years he served with the artillery.

He married Anna Maria Kissel January 4, 1866, in St. Thomas Township, Franklin County, but they had no children. No obituary was found in any online newspaper archive.

The widowed Anna married John Lingel and moved to Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois.
