The Guardian of the ring is gone. Warren LaRoy Tinder, a 33-year resident of Livermore, died after a massive heart attack Saturday, April 1, 1995, at Mt. Diablo Medical Center. He was 62. A veteran of the Korean War, he was in the Army Reserves for six years. Mr. Tinder was a member of the Steamfitters' Local Union No. 342 for 36 years, was a member of the Elks Lodge and of the Bethel Family Christian Center. He was a manager-coach at Lee's Gym in Concord and was a former professional boxer in the late 1950's and early 1960's in the Bay Area. Mr. Tinder took his love of boxing and used it to help youth at Lee's gym. Every weekday Tinder and his wife Jan would drive from their home in Livermore to Lee's Gym. Mr. Tinder was stout and rough-hewn, but gentle as a morning breeze. The Butte, Montana native loved boxing, but cared even more deeply for the youngsters who slipped on the gloves. Devoted Christians, Tinder and his wife believed it was their mission to reach out to youngsters. He always exhorted them to study hard in school. "Every kid who comes in here, whether he has two left feet, he can't fight or he loses, he's still a champ," Tinder said in December. He is survived by his wife, Janice Tinder; a daughter Sherril Tinder of Riverside; two sons, Fred and James Tinder, both of Livermore; four sisters, Helen Lindley of Fairfield, Flora Stephens of Montana, Ruth Dunivan of Livermore, and Betty DeSeguirant of San Lorenzo; a brother, Thomas Tinder of Richmond; and two grandchildren, Claire and Gregory Smith. Memorial services are 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Bethel Family Christian Center, Livermore. Callaghan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
