In 1870, Charles Hemminger, aged 3, was living in New York, NY, in the home of his parents, Charles Hemminger, aged 28, and Mary Hemminger, aged 25, with his sister, Rosa Hemminger, aged 1. His father was shown to be a porter.

In 1900, Charles Hemminger, aged 30, was living at 757 155th Street, in the Bronx, NY, with his wife, Sallie Hemminger, aged 28, his mother-in-law, Kate Stiefel, aged 51, and brother-in-law, George Stiefel, aged 27.

In 1910, Charles Hemminger, aged 43, was living at 79 West Avenue, Patchogue, Brookhaven, NY, with his wife, Sallie Hemminger, aged 40, and children, Helen E. Hemminger, aged 7, Charles F. In 1920, Charles Hemminger, aged 50, was living on South Street, Patchogue, NY, with his wife, Lizzie Hemminger, aged 35, and children, Helen Hemminger, aged 17, Charles Hemminger, aged 14, and Walter Hemminger, aged 7, and stepsons, George Klein, aged 15, and William Klein, aged 14. He was shown to be a bench hand at the lumber mill.

On August 1, 1922, his wife, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hemminger died in Patchogue, NY.

On February 3, 1923, his son, Walter Hemminger, aged 11 years, drowned in the mill pond today, when he and two companions broke through the treacherous ice. Samuel and Rubin Novick, the two playmates of young Hemminger, managed to scramble to safety. The three children were sliding on the pond when the ice gave way beneath their combined weight. When the two Novicks climbed out of the water and they saw that they could not help Hemminger, who was still struggling, they ran to the mill and gave the alarm. One hundred workmen rushed to the edge of the pond, but they were helpless to give aid. Before they could find a rowboat, the boy had disappeared under the ice. The pond was dragged for an hour before the body was recovered. Although artificial respiration was applied with an pulmonator, the boy could not be revived.

In 1925, Charles Hemminger, aged 56, was living on West Avenue, Patchogue, Brookhaven, NY. Living with him were his children, Helen E. Hemminger, aged 22, and Charles F. Hemminger, aged 19. He was shown to be a cabinet maker.

In 1930, Charles S. Hemminger, aged 61, was living at 55 Carman Street, Patchogue, NY with his wife, Jessie M. Hemminger, aged 65. He was shown to be a wood worker at the lumber mill.

In 1940, Charles Hemminger, aged 70, was living on Carman Street, Patchogue, with his wife, Jessie Hemminger, aged 76, and niece, Jennie Knox, aged 54. No occupation was given.

Obituary - Charles Hemminger, aged 70, died yesterday morning at his home, 55 Carman Street, Patchogue. Funeral service will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. from the residence with the Rev. Carl G. Gernannt of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Jessie Loper Hemminger, one daughter, Mrs. Helen Siemen, and a son, Charles J.R. Hemminger, both of Patchogue.

Mr. Hemminger, who was born in New York City, had lived in Patchogue about 35 years. He retired in 1934 from the E. Bailey and Sons mill, where he was employed as a carpenter for a number of years.
