Rehart Zahuranec of Lamor Road, Jefferson Township, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, in Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township, of natural causes. He was 88.

Mr. Zahuranec was born March 11, 1924, in Sunnyside, Pa., a son of John and Julia Dolnay Zahuranec.

He was a 1942 graduate of Hickory High School, Hermitage.

During World War II, Rehart served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific theater of operations. During his time in the military, he was an operator and gunner on a B-24 bomber. He flew many missions out of Port Moresby, New Guinea, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Following the war, he was hired at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. and was employed as a coil winder until his retirement in 1982.

At Westinghouse, he met his future wife, Mary Popp Zahuranec. She said she remembered his name because it rhymed with "sweetheart." They were married May 21, 1949, and shared 60 wonderful years until her passing Aug. 22, 2009.

He was a member of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, for more than 50 years and also attended Trinity Presbyterian Church in Mercer.

Rehart enjoyed gardening, tree farming and doing projects on his property. His main enjoyment was spending time with his family vacationing at the beach, attending Pittsburgh Pirates games and visiting zoos and parks. He also looked forward to attending annual reunions with his flight crew.

Surviving are: a daughter, Donna M. Sankey and her husband James A., Mercer; three sons, Gregory G. Zahuranec and his wife Joanne L., Jefferson Township; David J. Zahuranec and his wife Valeria A., Polk; and William A. Zahuranec and his wife Valerie L., Lewisburg, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren, Lisa Henry and her husband James; Lindsey Titus and her husband Peter; Gregory Sankey and his wife Anna; Andrea Beraducci and her husband John; Baron, Curtis, Ross and Diana Zahuranec; and Michael and Jessica Sankey; and a number of nephews and nieces.

In addition to his wife, Rehart was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, John, Frank, Andy, Vincent, Ralph, Dennis and Albert Zahuranec; a sister, Ethel Callen; and two sons, who died at birth.
