Forest Fire Sends Two To Hospital Tues. POPLAR BLUFF,, Mo., April 20. (IP) —A serious Wayne county forest fire which yesterday sent two fire fighters to a hospital here and caused heavy damage to growing timber, was under control today.
An investigation is in process to determine cause of the blaze. Carl Schlater, 25, nephew of Newt Schlater, sheriff of Wayne county, and Allen B. Hess, 16, of Patterson, were brought to the hospital last night for treatment of burns and other injuries. Schlater suffered serious burns when he found himself trapped by backfire and raced through the blazing fire line to escape what appeared to be fatal entrapment. Hess was endeavoring to flee from the fire when he was knocked down by a Jeep driving by Lennis Wilson of Piedmont; another fire fighter. Wilson said the smoke was so dense he couldn't see Hess. District Forester S. W. Bealke of Piedmont, said Hess was believed at first to have perished but he managed, to crawl through a weakened place in the fire line to safety.
