SEVEN INJURED WHEN TWO AUTOS CRASH;
DEPUTIES BLAME "WRONG LANE DRIVER"

Article Excerpt from the Salt Lake Telegram (Salt Lake City, UT) on Wednesday, August 2, 1939; Page 1:
Driver of the other car, Daniel Pitman, 41, of Magna, and Mrs. Daniel Pitman, 40, his wife, were in "poor" condition at the Salt Lake General Hospital. Deputy sheriffs said the automobiles collided almost head-on at a well-lighted section of the highway. They reported that one of the cars was in the wrong traffic lane, but they were unable to ascertain which driver was at fault.

Deputy Sheriffs D.H. Higginbotham, J.E. Scheib and Ernest Caldwell reported finding the victims removed from the automobiles, and Deputy Scheib said they probably suffered more serious injuries as a result of being moved by persons attempting to render first aid than they did as a result of the collision.

Mr. Pitman suffered a compound fracture of the right femur, scalp lacerations, a finger fracture on the left hand, and bruises.

SALT LAKE COUNTY CRASH CLAIMS SECOND VICTIM
Daniel Pitman, 42, of Magna, Thursday became the second victim of a horrific head-on collision of two automobiles early Wednesday when he died at 11:10 a.m. in a Salt Lake City hospital.

Mr. Pitman was born February 10, 1897 in Scofield, Utah, a son of Daniel and Mary Boyack Pitman. For 14 years he had worked as a flotation operator for the Utah Copper Company.

Also at the general hospital was Mr. Pitman's widow, Mrs. Evanna Jarvis Pitman, 40, reported in only fair condition. Attendants said her condition was so delicate they had not yet informed her of her husband's death.

Mr. Pitman is survived by his widow, three sons: Ernest, Don and Key Pitman; and a daughter, Bernice Pitman, all of Magna; four sisters: Mrs. Edward Nielson of Spanish Fork; Mrs. Mary A. Birch of Rigby, Idaho; Mrs. John E. Harris of Salt Lake City; and Mrs. Ruby Russell of Magna; his step-father, George Wilson of Magna; three half-brothers: James Wilson of Los Angeles; Harold and Earl Wilson of Magna; three step-sisters: Mrs. Beth Vander Viles and Mrs. Margaret Longnecker of Ogden; Mrs. Ethel Kerr of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and two step-brothers, John Wilson of Blackfoot, Idaho; and William T. Wilson of Pocatello, Idaho.
