Enlisted on Aug. 20, 1862 at age 42 and was mustered into service on Sep. 4, 1862 as a Sergeant in Company C of the 3rd Massachusetts Infantry. Promoted to First Sergeant, he was wounded in action on April 8, 1864 at Sabine Cross Roads, Louisiana and after an extended hospitalization was discharged due to the disability caused by his wounds.
He resided in Everett, MA following his military service where he was a member of the James A. Perkins G.A.R. Post 156.
