Betty Mathis Moak
BLYTHEWOOD - Mrs. Betty Moak, 80, of Blythewood, joined her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, March 4, 2014.
The funeral service for Mrs. Moak will be held 1 o'clock Friday, March 7th, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 90 Boney Road, Blythewood, SC. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall beginning at 11 o'clock. Burial will follow in St. Andrew's Lutheran Church Cemetery, 1729 Blythewood Road, Blythewood, SC, with the Rev. Seth Gibson officiating.
Born February 2, 1934, in Columbia, SC, she was a daughter of the late Furman and Mamie Elmore Mathis. Betty married her sweetheart and soul mate, Robert Moak, in June 1951. Betty grew up in a large family of two brothers and five sisters. Her love of family was always obvious to those who knew her. She treasured her friends and lived a wonderful life, showing her family how to love unconditionally and sharing her deep faith in God. I am sure angels carried her to Heaven quickly, as she was indeed a treasure.
From basketball, swimming, diving, and bolo paddle champion, she was always active. And her true love was roller skating on the streets of Columbia and through USC Campus where she grew up. Betty was a homemaker, active community volunteer with Girl Scouts, her church, and her daughters' school functions, played softball for the church team, and later took her love of skating into a fulltime job. She retired from Redwing Rollerway in 2006. She worked for over 42 years between Springdale Skating Rink, Foxcroft Skating Rink and Redwing Rollerway. Many children who are now grown and raising their own families and grandchildren remember "Miss Betty" fondly. She handled summer camp programs and PTO fundraisers for the numerous schools in the Midlands area.
She was well known in the Midlands and especially the Blythewood Community for her love of crafting that grew throughout the years. For over 25 years she crafted angels and made beautiful keepsakes. Her crafting skills led to many ribbons at the State Fair along with ribbons for her prizewinning butter pound cakes. Anyone who knew Betty, knew her generous spirit and most likely received one of those special keepsakes to remember her by.
Betty was a member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church and the Blythewood Lions Club, active in the Christian Adults Programs (CAPS) and continued using her crafting talents until her recent illness. Betty celebrated her 80th birthday on February 2, facing many medical adversities after being diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's) in April 2012. Her never-ending love for family was apparent to all. Betty is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert D. Moak; and daughters, Barbara (Howard) Beckham, Mamie (Steve) Turner, Nancy (Mike) Grogan; grandchildren, Ginny (Russell) Wright, Jamie (Amanda) Beckham, Tamara (Bryan) Day and Eric Grogan; and five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary M. Brewer of Columbia, Mickey (Mark) Hafey of Salt Lake City, UT, Virginia (W.L.) Warren of West Columbia, Nell Wylie of Blythewood; sister-in-law, Hilda Mathis of Lexington. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Eldridge Mathis and Douglas Mathis; and sister, Sallie Moak.
Her nephews will serve as pallbearers: Taussig Moak, Norman Moak, Mark Moak, Ronald Moak, James Warren and William Warren, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Blythewood Lions Club.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers and medical staff who assisted her during her illness: Dr. Michael Rivner and the staff of the ALS Clinic at Georgia Medical Center, and special thanks to Nicole Gaines who daily gave time and energy to her every need.
Memories and condolences may be added to the online guestbook at ShivesFuneralHome.com.
