Named for his grandfather, Methodist minister, Robert Henry White, Bob was the fourth and and last child and second son born to Abraham William Potts and his second wife, Harriet Caroline White Potts. His mother divorced his father before Robert was born. He registered for the draft for World War I. He served as a baker. He married Ethel and they had two children together, Bernard Z. Potts and Harriet Elizabeth Potts. On 5 May 1927 he crossed into Saskatchewan, Canada, where he farmed, according to a relative. On 23 March 1928 he was a patient at the US National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Hot Springs, South Dakota, suffering from cholecystitis, or gall bladder stones. Five days later he discharged himself. On 10 May 1930 the family lived in Bayard, Nebraska, where he farmed. According to a relative, the family moved permanently to his farm in Saskatchewan, Canada.
