Yvonne Crosby (Keeney) Davis, March 9, 1921 - September 11, 2021
When we think of Georgia (GA), we think of peaches, Stone Mountain, fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits and the greatest Georgia treasure of all, the grand dame of our family at 100 1/2 years old: Yvonne (Crosby) Davis. Yvonne was born in Blackshear, GA in 1921 to Raymond U. Crosby and Bettie Vann Crosby. She spent her childhood working on her family's farm picking cotton and stringing tobacco. Life wasn't easy in those days and when she was only four (4) years old, she lost her mother. From an early age she developed a strong work ethic and perseverance that would serve her well throughout her life. It was early on when she made what would form a lifetime friendship with her cousin and best friend Valdeese, both spending time with their grandmother. At this early age, Yvonne became a wonderful historian and talented story teller with a vivid imagination.
After graduating as Valedictorian of her class in 1939, Yvonne moved to Miami, Florida, attended Secretarial School during the day and worked as a waitress in the evenings. She enjoyed a more active lifestyle in South Florida including in the early 1940's being named the Queen of Vasa Hall, a Swedish-American Fraternal Organization. It was in Miami where she met and later married Charles Keeney on May 4, 1944 and had two daughters, Cheryl Keeney and Charlene (Steve) Hinton. The family lived in various places in Georgia and later moved back to Miami. Charles passed away in 1971.
She worked as an Executive Secretary to the President of Russell Aluminum for many years and later, met and married Bruce Davis who she married on June 24, 1966. Bruce had three children, Bruce Davis, Roger Davis and Bonnie Davis Grimm. After retirement, the couple moved to Port Richey on the west coast of Florida. Yvonne continued to develop her many talents including detailed needle and seamstress work, making and painting ceramics and preparing some of the best Southern cooking recipes that you could ever have the opportunity to eat!. After Bruce's passing, Yvonne went to live with her daughter Cheryl in Camarillo, California. They later moved to New Hampshire to be near Charlene and her family (Steve and Yvonne's granddaughter, Melissa).
In 2014, she had the opportunity to move back to Georgia and live with Valdeese's wonderful daughter (Peggy Hart), and her husband, Stephen. In her "golden years", she enjoyed a life filled with love, laughter (thank you, Stephen), and all things Georgia. Peggy and Stephen along with Mae Shaw took care of Yvonne with tender loving care and made her final years the best that anyone could imagine. She truly loved being back home.
Yvonne left us on September 11th at the age of 100 1/2 years old. Her family and many friends are very grateful for all of the memories, stories and love given to us by this wonderful lady who overcame so many challenges to live such a full and long life.
