Mrs. Smith, or "Miss Anna" as she was called by most, and "Big Anna" by some, was originally from Orangeburg, SC, and the daughter of the late William Henry and Margaret Louise Garrison Flanders of Swainsboro, GA, and the late Robert Henry Garrison of Anderson, SC. Anna moved to Swainsboro, at the age of five and remained a life-long resident of Swainsboro and Emanuel County. She married the late James Randolph Smith, also a life-long Swainsboro resident on December 31, 1949.
From early childhood, Anna was a member of Swainsboro United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She deeply loved her Church and its many members. As a member of this Church, she served on the Board of Trustees and the Administrative Board. Additionally, she had a deep and abiding love for Swainsboro and the people of this community. She was one of Emanuel County's first professional women, and was employed by Suburban Propane, becoming the first female manager in the South Atlantic Region. She retired in 1993 after 38 years of dedicated service. She was the first woman to be appointed to the Board of The Swainsboro Housing Authority, where she served for many years. Anna was a charter member of the Swainsboro Pilot Club, and a member of the Glad Garden Club. In 2012, the Xi Delta Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi chose Miss Anna as its "Lady of the Year."
Anna was preceded in death by her parents as well as her husband of 54 years, James Randolph Smith, and her brother, Frank M. Flanders. Should friends desire contributions may be made to the Swainsboro First United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 319 W. Main Street, Swainsboro, GA 30401.
