Douglas McWhirter was born May 19, 1865, in Belton, Bell County, Texas and died in 1866. He was the son of George Merlin/Marlin McWhirter and Martha White McWhirter. George and Martha had five or six children who died young and two of the infants were buried in their back yard. The others who died young were: Mary, born 1849 in Tennessee, Andrew, born and died in 1853, George Merlin was born in 1862 and died in 1866 and according to Webster, he would not be considered an infant, and William McWhirter, born about 1868. The children born before 1855 were probably born in Wilson County, Tennessee as that is when they moved to Bell County, Texas. There is possibly another child who died young as "The Handbook of Texas" stated George and Martha had twelve children and only six of them survived. (GMT)
(Webster's Dictionary describes an infant as one who has not begun to walk.)
