U.S. Congressman. Before entering politics, he worked in a clock factory in New Haven, Connecticut (1841 to 1845). He was a member of the New Haven City Council in 1848 and a member of the Connecticut General Assembly in 1852. In 1855, he was elected as an American to the Thirty-fourth Congress, serving until 1857. He was again elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth Congress (1859 to 1861). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed collector of internal revenue for the second district of Connecticut in 1862 and served until his death.
