Son of Mrs. Hannah Morrissey, of Clonkeen, Maryborough [now Portlaoise].
He died at University War Hospital, Southampton, England, of wounds received in France. His mother travelled to Southampton, and brought his body home for burial.
Hannah Drought, daughter of James and Julia Drought, was twice married.
By her first husband Michael Flynn, whom she married on 28 November 1880, she was the mother of
Patrick, Michael, James, and Joseph Flynn.
Joseph Flynn, son of Michael Flynn and Hannah Drought, was born on 16 March 1897, and was baptised at St. Michael's Church, Portarlington, on 20 March 1897.
His sponsors were James Kehoe and Elizabeth Drought.
In the 1901 census, the Flynn family were living at Pallas Little, Clondarrig, Queen's Co. [this is NW of Portlaoise]
present were,
Hannah Flynn, aged 41, a domestic farm servant, widow, born in Queen's Co.
Patrick, son, aged 13, born in Queen's Co.
Michael, son, aged 8, born in Queen's Co.
James, son, aged 6, born in King's Co.
Joseph, son, aged 4, born in King's Co.
By the 1911 census, Hannah had re-married.
In the 1911 census, the Morrisseys were living at Clonkeen, Queen's Co. [this is SW of Portlaoise]
present were,
Michael Morrissey, aged 45, a Farmer, married,
Hannah, his wife, aged 51, married
They had been married 9 years and had no children.
also present was
James Drought, father-in-law, aged 80, a Retired Farmer, widower,
There was no sign of any of the 4 Flynn sons in the 1911 census of Ireland.
Joseph Flynn enlisted on 27 December 1914. Following training, he was sent to France on 16 August 1915.
Joseph was injured on 9 October 1915 during the Battle of Loos, France. He appears to have received further very serious injuries in the days 17-20 October, and was evacuated to a base hospital. He was transferred to England on 21 October, where he died from his injuries on 24 October 1915.
The date of his death recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is 2 October 1915.
