In 1980, she traveled to Haiti to work as a missionary nurse for the Children's School of the Deaf. In 1984, she retired and moved to Washington and in 2004, she returned to Kansas to be with her family. Lou was preceded in death by brothers Earl and John McAllister.
Survived by children: Ruth Ann Herron & her husband Robert, Melinda Price, David Price, and Doreen Storment; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; as well as brother, Tom McAllister of New Cambria, KS, and sisters, Ruth Manning of Salina, KS, and Gladys Cagle of Towanda, KS.
