Harry A. Smith, 78, of West Third Street, Berwick, died suddenly on Wednesday morning, March 19, 2014, in Berwick Hospital Center.
Born in Berwick on March 27, 1935, he was the son of the late Melvin H. and Mary (Ash) Smith, and attended school in Philadelphia. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1954. He was employed at Pennsylvania American Water Company, Berwick, for 40 years. He was currently working part time as a security guard for Intrepid Detective Agency, Hazleton.
Harry was formerly a volunteer with Reliance Fire Company. He enjoyed league bowling, and playing baseball and softball. He was a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, as well as the Philadelphia Eagles and Berwick Bulldog football teams.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 56 years, the former Starlene J. Baylor; daughters: Pam Smith, Berwick; Kim Kressler and husband, Jim, Berwick; Melissa Deitrich and husband, Alan, Nescopeck; son, Jeff Smith, Berwick; as well as grandchildren: Brooke McHenry; Mandy McHenry; Alyssa Coleman; Garrett Aten; Kendra Smith; Karagin Smith; Jimmy Kressler; and Justin Kressler; great-grandchildren: Trevor McHenry; Dakota, Landon and Teagan Rubenstein; and Hylee Kressler. He is also survived by a sister, Beverly Swabey, Berwick; brother, Charles Smith, Washington; and many nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Smith; and sister, Flora "Toot" Bauman.
A viewing will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2014, at Heller Funeral Home, 633 E. Third St., Nescopeck.
