Born November 13, 1882, at Honolulu. Son of Frederick Washington and Emilie Widemann Macfarlane. Married Sarah Van Gieson, September 15, 1932, at Ahuimanu, Oahu. Children: by a previous marriage - Alice Macfarlane Casassa (deceased), Walter James (deceased), Muriel Macfarlane Flanders, Helen, and Wyatt E; and F. Walter, Jr. Mr. Macfarlane died November 19, 1953.
After graduating from St. Mary's High School, San Francisco, Punahou School, Honolulu, and Peralto Academy, West Berkeley, he studied at the University of California at Berkeley.
Mr. Macfarlane worked with his father at the Union Feed Company after leaving the university. In 1907, in partnership with his father, he incorporated the Kahaluu Pineapple & Ranch Company and built a cannery at Kahaluu. The company was incorporated with Libby, McNeill & Libby of Honolulu in 1911 with Mr. Macfarlane serving as president.
The Macfarlane interests were sold to Libby, McNeill & Libby of Chicago in 1917, after which Mr. Macfarlane left the company and founded the Macfarlane Tuna Company, forerunner of Hawaiian Tuna Packers. He moved to California in 1919 and lived there until 1926, when he returned to the islands to operate the poultry ranch at Niu. In 1934, he joined Hawaiian Tuna Packers and was employed there until his retirement August 31, 1953.
Mr. Macfarlane was a member of the Hawaii Polo Club and for many years played on the Oahu Polo Team. He served as a member of the Territorial Board of Health and was a member of the Outrigger Canoe Club, Hawaiian Civic Club and St. Christopher's Episcopal Church.
Mr. Macfarlane's grandfather, the Honorable H. A. Widemann was a member of the Privy Council during the Hawaiian monarchy and served as Minister of Interior and Finance and Attorney General. His uncle George Walter Macfarlane, went with King Kalakaua to England as his Chamberlain.
