By 1850 the family had moved to Ohio, and by 1856 to Iowa.William enlisted from Iowa City, with his brothers Benjamin and John, as a Private in Company "I", 22nd Iowa Infantry on 18 August 1862. He was promoted 7th Corporal of his company on 1 November 1864, and was ushered out with the Regiment in Savannah on 25 July 1865.He married Sarah Ellen Bair (1847-1930) in 1868, and they had at least three children: Rhoda, Lena and Charles. The family had moved to Wayne County, Nebraska by 1885.
