William, a farmer by occupation, was the son of Oliver Archer and Harriet A. Manning. By 1850 the family had moved to Ohio, and by 1856 to Iowa.William enlisted from Iowa City, with his brothers Benjamin and John, as a Private in Company "I", 22nd Iowa Infantry on 18 August 1862. He was promoted 7th Corporal of his company on 1 November 1864, and was ushered out with the Regiment in Savannah on 25 July 1865.He married Sarah Ellen Bair (1847-1930) in 1868, and they had at least three children: Rhoda, Lena and Charles. The family had moved to Wayne County, Nebraska by 1885.
