Thomas Lord, the son of a yeoman whose lands were confiscated due to his support of the Jacobite Rising, was raised in Norfolk. As a young man he moved to london and became a bowler at the White Conduit Cricket Club. In 1786, and with financial backing from the gentry, Lord leased land near Dorset Sq in London for the Marylebone Cricket Club. The club moved to a new site in 1809, a site it still occupies and which is now known as 'Lord's'. It is considered the Home of Cricket. Lord himself retired to Hampshire, died at West meon and was buried there. His son, also called Thomas, was a notable cricketer in his own right.
