Evelyn Decker was born December 21, 1926 to Martin and Maria (Hofer) Waldner of Carpenter. She attended grade school at Carpenter. Evelyn graduated from Willow Lake High School and attended Summer School at General Beadle in Madison, SD which allowed her to teach school.
On June 29, 1950 she married Peter Decker at Hutterthal Mennonite Church of Carpenter. She taught school for five years at rural schools in Spink and Clark Counties. She and Pete farmed near Carpenter for 31 years and was married for 35 years and 3 months. After his death, Evelyn and her daughter, Marodean, moved to Huron where they lived for the past 18 years.
Evelyn was a member of the Hutterthal Mennonite Church of Carpenter. She faithfully attended Bethesda Mennonite Church of Huron until ill health caused her to worship at home. She accepted Jesus as her savior, was baptized and received into membership at the Hutterthal Mennonite Church in September 1946 by the Rev. J.R. Hofer. She taught Sunday school for many years at Hutterthal Mennonite Church. Evelyn was faithful in writing encouraging letters and remembering friends and relatives with cards and knitting slippers throughout her lifetime. She always had time to visit and loved being hostess whenever anyone came home. Evelyn spent much of her time listening to gospel music and especially liked old German Hymns.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Marodean, of Huron, her five sisters, Anna Hofer of De Smet; Katie Glanzer of Huron, Lydia (Gearhard) Hofer of Huron; Esther (Elgin) Hofer of Frankfort, Adena (Alvin) Tschetter, all of Huron, a brother-in-law, Ben, and sister-in-law, Agnes (Waldner) Hofer of Huron; a good friend Gladys Hofer, and a host of other friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Peter; three brothers, Martin, Mike, and Jacob Waldner; one sister, Elsie Hofer; and two brothers-in-law, Elard Glanzer and Edwin Hofer.
