According to the Robert Bardwell descendants book, Anna Hussey emigrated to the US as a young girl from Ireland, probably in one of the "coffin ships," leaving her home during the potato famine. Her parents, James Hussey and his wife, both died on the journey to America, and she and her siblings were adopted by different American couples. Anna was adopted by Almira Morton of Whately, Massachusetts. In 1859, when she was 19, Anna married George Washington Bardwell, a farmer known for his successful method for rejuvenating aging apple trees, who went on to serve in the Civil War as a sergeant. In 1860 the census shows the newlyweds sharing their house with Mrs. Morton and a much older woman named Sybil Pease. Anna and George had three children, Conrad Myron Bardwell (born in 1860), James Hosmer Bardwell, and George Dwight Bardwell. Anna Hussey Bardwell died of consumption (tuberculosis) at the young age of 29. Her husband remarried Jane Stowell and had three more children with her.
