He was probably born as Haaie Tuinstra in February 1896 in Chicago, the second of 16 children of Fokke alias Fred Tuinstra and Grietje alias Grace Boomsma, named for his maternal grandfather Haye Johannes Boomsma.

In June 1900 Haaie (4 y, born in February 1896 in Illinois), his father Fred Quinstra (27, Holland, immigrated in 1891, dairy farmer), his mother Grietje (25, Holland, immigrated in 1892), his siblings Roel (2, October 1897, Illinois) and Klaske (1, June 1899, Illinois) lived in Hyde Park Township, 99 Street, Ward 34, in the southern part of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Quite remarkable: his brother Peter, born in May 1894 in Chicago, was not present then. Staying with relatives? Two houses further on his aunt Riemke Tuinstra DeVries lived with her husband and three children.

In 1910 Harry (14), his father Fokke Tuinstru (37), his mother Grietje (35), his siblings Peter (18), Ralph (12 y), Clara (11 y), Elizabeth (9 y), Agnes (2 y) and Grietje (1 y) lived in ward 33 of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

They moved then to Racine County, in the southeastern part of Wisconsin, near Lake Michigan, where in August 1911 his sibling John was born, followed by Reka (1914), Samuel (1916), Anna Susie (1919) and Henry (1920).

On 5 June 1917 the single Harry Tuinstra was living and farming with his parents and siblings in the community of Franksville in eastern Racine County, when he was administrated on a World War I Draft Registration Card.

In the book "Racine County in the World War" by Walter L. Haight" is on page 587, 1st World War, written:
"TUINSTRA Harry 2100 Frank St.
2 Company 15 Spr Division; private; Vancouver
Sep 21-17 - Dec 30-18".

Harry Tuinstra married on 26 September 1919 in Racine to Cornelia [Hazina] (Cora) Heusdens, who was born on 13 January 1899 in Hellevoetsluis, close to Rotterdam, in the southwestern part of the Dutch southwestern province Zuid-Holland.

In 1920 Harry Tuinstra (23, Illinois) and his wife Cornelia (20, Holland, immigrated in 1917) lived in Ward 9 of the city of Racine, seat of Racine County, located on the shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Root River, in the southeastern part of Wisconsin.

In 1930 Harry Tuinstra (34), his wife Cora H (31, Holland, immigrated in 1916), their children Grace C (9, Wisconsin), Florence (5, Wisconsin), and Harry (3, Wisconsin) lived still in the city of Racine.

In April 1940 Harry Tuinstra (43, farmer), his wife Cora (41), their children Grace (19), Audrey (15), Harry (13), Cornelius (6, Wisconsin) and Barbara (0, Wisconsin) lived at a rented farm in Mount Pleasant Town, Racine County, Wisconsin. They lived in 1935 at a rural place in Columbia County, in the midsouthern part of Wisconsin.

His wife Cornelia died on 21 September 1968 at the age of 69 years at the St. Luke's Hospital at Milwaukee following a lingering disease. Harry Tuinstra died in March 1981 at the age of 85 years at Quincy Avenue in Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin.
