MRS. HASTINGS PASSED
AWAY IN SLEEP
Mrs. Adeline McDonald Hastings,
83 years old, and for many years a
resident of St. Johnsbury, was found
dead in her bed yesterday morning at
her home on Caledonia street. Mrs.
Hastings despite her advanced years had
lived alone since the death of Mr.
Hastings 12 years ago. Yesterday
morning, her niece, Mrs. R. R. Wakefield,
who lived next door following
her usual custom, went to her aunt's
house. Not being able to get in she
inquired of neighbors if Mrs. Hastings
had gone out. No one having seen
her, she called J. S. Weeks, who gain
ed entrance through a window, and
he found Mrs. Hasting's remains in
the bed, where she had evidently
quietly passed away during the early
morning hours.
Mrs. Hastings was born in Danville,
March 20, 1834, and lived there during
her early life. When about 20
years of age she married Stephen
Hutchinson, who died within a few
years after their marriage. She came
to St. Johnsbury about 33 years ago
as the bride of Amasa Hastings. They
moved to the house on Caledonia
street, where she has lived a greater
part of the time since. For a time
with Mr. Hastings, she was in charge
of the town farm and was also matron
for a time following her husband's death.
She was an attendant and greatly
interested in the work of the Church
of the Messiah, Universalist.
Although coming of a large family
of eight children she is survived by
only one sister, Mrs. Hannah Williams
of this place. The funeral will be held
from the late home on Caledonia
street Wednesday afternoon Rev. C.
L. Eaton will officiate and the interment
will be the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
