When Pearlie was 10 months old, his sisters tied him to a rocking chair and placed him near an open fireplace to keep warm. Pearlie rocked and the chair titled into the hot bed of coals, causing a very bad burn and permanent scars to his face.
When Pearlie was 2 years old, his father was shot and killed in Keystone, West Virginia.
Pearlie was a coal miner at Pickskin, WVA in the early 1920's. He and Beulah lived in several coal mining camps. Getting away from the coal mining industry, Pearlie was employed with the Raleigh Cash Grocery, a wholesale establishment for a number of years. He was also employed with the Whitby Coal Company Store for some time.
Pearlie and Beulah lived in Coal City, West Virginia for many years and last lived in Cooleemee, North Carolina.
