William "Big Bill" Evans was born about 1803 in Virginia, but he always stated he was born in Kentucky. All his sons stated he was born in Virginia, but it is believed that it later became part of Kentucky.

Once when Son Samuel, wife Mahala, and their Grandchildren went to Kentucky, all the kin meet for dinner on the ground by the river. All the young men were trying to walk a log across the river, all that tried would fall in the river. At last Big Bill said "Let a man show you kids how to walk that log." He walked across the log and on the way back he did a little jig and flapped his arms like a bantam rooster, and said "I am a better man than all of them." At this time he was close to 100 years young, not old.

William Evans ancestors came to America from Wales, and were Welsh Baptists. They worked the coal mines in Virginia and Kentucky, as they did in Wales.

"Samuel Evans spoke often of his love for his half-sister Nicie Ellen (Coy) Corley.
I believe Nicie Ellen’s mothers name was Mary Coy, sister to Lavanie Jane (Coy) Evans but there is no proof.
I found Nicie Ellen and Mary Coy on the 1850 census***, but not Evans in Butler County at that time.****
The William Evans family must have moved from Butler County for a short time because Samuel married in Butler County in June 9, 1851 Samuel Evans made trips back to Kentucky to visit his beloved sister Nicie Ellen Corley and family and his father William Evans “Big Bill” and his second wife Sally."
