After graduation from Parker High School, Leonard Alan Pier married E. May Waterbury in Kimball, SD. That same year, in 1908, the couple moved to Belvidere, SD.

For 68 years Pier served as president and chief executive officer of the Belvidere State Bank. In 1957, he retired at the age of 90, leaving the banking business to his son, James Pier.

During the 68 years he was operating the Belvidere State Bank, Leonard Pier devoted much time and energy to the Belvidere community. He served as a volunteer fireman, the town board, school board, operated street grading equipment and along the road from Interstate 90 into Belvidere he planted and nurtured flowering crabapple trees.

Pier served as a member of the State Banking Commission under Governors Berry, Herseth and Gubbrud.

An avid small and big game hunter, fisherman, gardener and a believer in the land, Pier received an award for his work in conservation. Many of the trophies of his big game hunts into Alaska and Canada were displayed on the walls of the Belvidere State Bank.

Leonard Pier was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner, and IOOF member, life-member of the South Dakota Wildlife Federation and various bankers groups
