Charlotte died from consumption, almost 3 months after giving birth to a son, Virgil Cooper Alcorn, on September 25, 1909. Virgil was raised by his aunt Annie Cooper Merchant, Lottie's sister. Charlotte's husband, & Virgil's father, moved his family to Fresno, California. Annie Cooper Merchant did not want to release the baby, Virgil back to his father to take to California. Annie Cooper Merchant raised Virgil Cooper Alcorn Merchant as her own child. Virgil later in life "assumed" the Merchant family last name, and became Virgil Cooper Merchant. Virgil was not actually adopted by Calvin and Annie Merchant.
