Michael was born on 23 Sept.1857, in Mielno, Lipnica, Bytow, Pomorskie, Poland, the first child of Ignatz Rutza and Marianna Ryngwelska (Rutz, Rutza and Ruca are the same surname used interchangeably in the Polish records).
He immigrated to Morrison County, Minnesota, about 1881, followed by his father, his second wife and several siblings the following year. Michael’s mother died in Poland during 1873.
Michael married the widow Agnes Tomaszewski (maiden name Superczynski) on 18 June 1883 in North Prairie, Morrison County, MN. She had four children with her first husband August, who died in Chicago during the early 1880s where three of their four children were born. Agnes then moved to Morrison County where she had three Superczynski brothers and one sister in the Flensburg area, also born in Poland.
Agnes homesteaded 120 acres in Culdrum Township, which includes Flensburg. The final papers were signed July 3, 1890 in her name with no mention of Michael for reasons unknown. The couple continued to farm that land until her death on May 17, 1914. They had no children of their own.
Minnesota marriage records show the marriage of widower Michael Rutza and widow Victoria Kaminski (maiden name Malak) on Sept. 22, 1914 in McLeod County. The Jan. 1920 census has the couple farming in Culdrum Township with one child, Frank Rutz, born 4 Nov. 1915, and four step-children from Victoria’s first marriage.
The April 1930 census has the couple and their son living in Silver Lake, McLeod County, where Michael died on March 3, 1938.
