Police today charged Walter Sprankle, 47 with murder in the hickory club beating of FREDERICK EARL ANDREWS, 41. Police said Andrews was found unconscious Saturday night in the frame dwelling of Charles W. Langenstein by officers who responded to a telephone call by a neighbor complaining of a disturbance. He died at midnight, two hours later, at Washington County Hospital where authorities said he suffered 11 fractures of the skull. Police said he had been beaten with a hickory club.

Frederick Andrews was born and reared in Hagerstown, the son of Frederick and Mary A. (Bowers) Andrews. For 16 years he was employed by the Hagerstown Ribbon Company, and he was a member of the Antietam Fire Company.

Surviving are wife, Barbara; daughter, Judy; parents; sisters, Mrs. Walden Hays, Mrs. Paul Miller; brothers, George W., Harry L., Franklin C., Paul R., all of Hagerstown.

Funeral services were held at the A.K. Coffman Funeral Home; burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
